The SSW Food and Beverage Manufacturing Test

The SSW Food and Beverage Manufacturing Test

Food and beverage manufacturing (飲食料品製造業, inshokuryōhin seizōgyō) is one of the fields of Specified Skilled Worker (i), or SSW (i). It covers factories that make and process food and drinks, such as bread, sweets, prepared side dishes, noodles, frozen food, seafood products and soft drinks. Alcoholic drinks are not included. To get SSW (i) status in this field, you normally need two results: a pass in this skills test and a pass in a Japanese language test (JFT-Basic, or JLPT N4 or higher). People who have completed Technical Intern Training level 2 in a related job may be exempt. The general route is explained in the course "Mengenal Jalur Kerja ke Jepang".

The practical part does not ask you to cook in front of an examiner. It checks your judgement in work situations, for example which action is correct, safe or hygienic. The test is held in Japan and in several other countries, including Indonesia. Dates and venues are announced by OTAFF and the test provider.

What the test covers

  • Food hygiene (食品衛生, shokuhin eisei): hazards in food, basic hygiene management, and HACCP.
  • Occupational safety (労働安全, rōdō anzen): common accidents in food factories and how to prevent them.

OTAFF publishes a free official learning textbook on its website, in Japanese with furigana and in translated versions, including Indonesian. The questions are based on that textbook, so make it your main study material. This course helps you understand the key ideas, but it does not replace the textbook.

How to prepare

  1. Read the official textbook chapter by chapter and mark new words.
  2. Learn key terms with their readings, not only their meaning in Indonesian.
  3. Practice reading Japanese with furigana at a steady speed, so that 70 minutes is enough.
  4. When unsure, choose the answer that best protects the food and the people: stop, separate, report.
  5. Link each rule to a real scene in a factory you know.

A change to watch

From April 1, 2027, this field is scheduled to be split into two categories: food and beverage manufacturing, and seafood processing (水産加工業, suisan kakōgyō). Check which test and category apply to you before you register.

Jobagus.id does not charge registration fees and cannot promise a pass, a job or a visa. Be careful with anyone who offers "guaranteed" results for money.

Test details can change. Always check the latest information on otaff.or.jp and ssw.go.jp.
